British Sites

Scotland's People - the official government source of genealogical data for Scotland. Includes images for the Births & Marriages from the Old Parish Registers 1553-1854, and from the Statutory Registers: Births 1855-1909, Marriages 1855-1934 & Deaths 1855-1959 (indexes for all statutory registers are searchable up to 2006), all the Census and Wills & Testaments.
Ancestry - extensive collection enables members to explore their family history using censuses, the fully indexed birth, marriage and death records, passenger lists, the British phone books, military and parish records.
FindMyPast For Birth, Marriage & Death indexes for England & Wales 1837-2002, also includes British Nationals overseas 1761-1994.
FreeBMD is an ongoing project, the aim of which is to transcribe the Civil Registration index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales, and to provide free Internet access to the transcribed records. It is a part of the FreeUKGEN family, which also includes FreeCEN (Census data) and FreeREG (Parish Registers). These last 2 include Scottish records.

Scottish Archives Network The website of the Scottish Wills Project has a searchable index to Scottish Wills 1500-1901.
The website of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is a searchable database of 1,700,000 men & women of the Commonwealth forces who died in the two world wars, and other conflicts.
National Archives The documents online section of this site has details of campaign & service medals for members of the forces in the first world war.
The National Library of Scotland has a section on Old Maps - you will be able to find early Ordnance Survey maps for all of Orkney, see the example for Kirkwall
